  • Tagging letters in STaM writing – and the advantage of a quality rapidograph pen
  • Among all the subtleties of STaM writing, one of the most precise and sensitive crafts is tagging. These are thin lines drawn above certain letters, written after completing the main body of the letter.
  • The tool used for this tagging must be precise, stable, and delicate. It is not by chance that many mehudar Sofrim chose to use precisely a professional Staedtler rapidograph pen – a quality German pen designed for high-level technical work.
  • What is the source of tagging in Halacha?
  • The source for tagging appears in the words of the Sages and Midrashim
  • In the Talmud (Shabbat 104a)
  • "The letters that were spoken at Sinai were spoken with tags."
  • Moses received the Torah with the tags, and the Sages note that there is a deep mystical and spiritual significance to this tagging.
  • Among the Rishonim (Rosh on the Laws of STaM)
  • "There is a preferred Mitzvah to tag the letters of ShATeN"Z G"TZ."
  • Halacha L'Maaseh (Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah 276)
  • There is no obligation from the Torah, but it is the custom of all Sofrim to be mehudar and tag the letters ShATeN"Z G"TZ – namely
  • Shin, Ayin, Tet, Nun, Zayin, Gimel, Tzadi – with three tags (small crowns) on top of the letter.
  • Why are there tags at all?
  • Hiddur Mitzvah of STaM writing – being meticulous about precise and beautiful writing.
  • Kabbalah and tradition – it is said in the Zohar that there are hints to the Holy Names and secrets of Torah in the tags.
  • Beauty and holiness – the tags are likened to letters with a regal and honorable appearance.
  • Special intention – with each tag, the Sofer intends to elevate holiness – there are Kabbalists who say "I have set the Lord before me always" while doing so.
  • Why a Staedtler rapidograph pen?
  • A rapidograph pen is a technical drafting pen with a millimetric diameter
  • The clear advantages for a Sofer
  • Maximum precision – each tag is written with micrometric precision, without shift or deviation.
  • Uniformity – all letters are tagged with the same thickness, uniform and honorable appearance.
  • Quick drying – ink that dries immediately and does not smear on the parchment.
  • Durability – pigmented ink suitable for parchment, does not fade.
  • Ease of work – allows fast tagging without effort or need for a scraper.
  • Some mehudarim use the fill pen with STaM ink, but most Sofrim today rely on rapidograph ink which lasts many years and is not inferior in quality. Black and verified halakhically that it is not made from unclean animal matter
  • Why is this mehudar?
  • A Sofer who is careful to write tags that are precise, upright, delicate, and equal in height – this appearance shows "Zeh Eli v'Anvehu"
  • The use of a quality tool like Staedtler proves that the writing is not merely technical – but rather sacred work in the fullest sense of the word.
